So a month has passed. I took excursions with the family, did intense shopping, went on an idyllic beach holiday in remote parts of Bali. I watched countless hours of Agatha Christie, bought several books (reading maybe 20 percent of them, but no matter, my house is now deliciously riddled with amazingly interesting, well-written books). I did several self-awareness exercises and AND most importantly I discovered that it is NOT impossible for a cartoonist to paint (even if I do paint badly). I’ve even got a cartoon project to work on. So all in all, it was pretty well-spent, all this time. I got to be with the husband, my family, the cat, learnt more about myself and am not about to start work to do what I’ve got a lot of potential to do well in. Life is good.

‘Japanese Cats Gossip’, Acrylic on canvas. It was a painful process, and strictly naive since I had no idea what to do with canvas (and actually had to tape it down halfway while painting, since I didn’t know these things curled as you color!). The outlines has to be short and thick too with pitfalls along the way. But at the same time the process absorbed me so much. It made me think a great deal, and sometimes not at all. I’ve fallen in love with painting, I consider myself lucky to fall in love again ( after my husband). I used to worry that I have no teachers, no formal training. But I read somewhere that people struggle to find their ‘innocence’ or identity after art school, maybe this naïveté should be something I’m proud of. It doesn’t matter. It is peaceful, all of it. Even the imperfections.

Today I experimented, for the second time, with acrylic. It’s a wonderfully vibrant medium, braver and zestier and much more forgiving than water color (although you still need to be patient and steady your hand, at least for my style that relies a lot on black outlines). I really enjoyed it. These ‘portraits’ are for my house. Me as a tri-colored cat, my husband as the turtle with a tie and our cat, Monkey - as a Monkey :) Will be framing these vertically in a row for a splash of color in the house. It’ll be a hoot explaining to guests.

Practice sketch of a Nyonya cat on a ciggy break. My late grandmother was always seen in a Kebaya, and I’ve always thought these ladies exuded such invincible and self-assured femininity in them. My sketchbook now has many Nyonya cats, hoping to complete a colored one soon. Due to the intricacy of their motifs it’s quite a challenge on stylus :p
